The American Patriot’s Almanac: Daily Readings on America / William J. Bennett and John T.E. Cribb (Thomas Nelson, 2008) Hardcover, 515 p. ISBN: 9781595552679 The American Patriot’s Almanac is not meant to be read cover to cover. It includes 365 daily readings for each date of the year. Each reading highlights one important event that happened on that date and lists several more. It also includes various short supplementary essays on such topics as various flags, songs, and important historical documents. In all, the book includes a good mix of old and recent events, men and women, including minorities. William J. Bennett, former Secretary of Education, has become well known as a conservative author, commentator, and lightning rod. With co-author John T.E. Cribb, he has produced a book dedicated to helping Americans feel good about being American. One does not need to share his political viewpoints to appreciate his achievement in compiling more than 2000 events and many documents, some well known and many hardly known at all. You might be interested to find out what kinds of things happened on your birthday. You might be interested in refreshing your memory of what you covered in the various classes you had in school. You might be interested in such nuggets as the date and place where the first kindergarten class started. And what better way for a family with small children to build a habit of togetherness than to establish a daily reading time? The almanac format, with each date’s entry taking only a single page, is ideally suited for such a time. Home schoolers will also find The American Patriot’s Almanac a very useful supplement for whatever history textbooks they use. Even people who have confessed not liking any of their history classes have expressed their enjoyment of The American Patriot’s Almanac.
